Audition Process
How do Auditions Work?
Auditions are open to all JLHS students, regardles of them being enrolled in a drama/stage craft class or not. Students sign up for time slots and bring their completed audition forms/packet with them to their scheduled auditions
Play Auditions
Students will register for an audition time and bring their completed paperwork. Once at the audition students will be given "sides" which are snippets of scenes or monologues and are asked to briefly study them before we do cold readings.
Musical Auditions
The musical audition process is a rigorous one. Students will register for an audition time for each of the areas listed below, and bring their completed paperwork to the first day of auditions.

Students prepare a 16-32 bar cut of a song in the style of the show.

The Callback Process
Callback materials are generally emailed out to students individually with their character(s) specified in the email. They are then responsible for practicing the materials before they show up to their callback. Most plays only have one day of callbacks, musicals can sometimes have a week of callbacks, having designated days for each area. Sometimes, we have a fourth day of callbacks which we call "Final Callbacks". If your student doesn't receive a callback this does not necessarily mean they won't be cast. Callbacks are simply just another opportunity for the production team to see your student again, this does not guarantee them a place in the show.
The Casting Process
At James Logan we do our best to cast all students in our productions, however, most productions are subject to cuts. We frequently have understudies, and in some cases will double cast. (Double casting is having two casts for one production)
If we have understudies, they are guaranteed 1 of our evening shows and have the possibility of 1 matinee (determined by show needs)
Doubles will either have 2 or 3 shows out of 5 with at least 1 evening and 1 matinee. If a student drops from the show their double will pick up their shows. (For this reason do not schedule other commitments on show dates)
If students (not parents) have questions about casting or if they don't make a show they are always welcome to ask the directors and/or other support staff about their own auditions. Directors and Staff will not discuss other performers auditions, but we are always happy to help actors improve.
Please note sometimes the student can be "Perfect" for a role, but they don't play well against a key part of the ensemble, so they don't get the role. (I.E. Two people who have to play sisters, but don't have any chemistry as sisters)
